# Dictation vs typing: how much time you'd actually save

2 October 2026

The average typist in a study of 168,000 people managed about 52 words a minute (Dhakal et al., CHI 2018). A relaxed speaking pace is around 130. On paper, talking is two and a half times faster.

## What that's worth

If you write 2,000 words a day across email, chat and documents, typing takes about 38 minutes and speaking about 15. That's 23 minutes a day, or nearly two hours a week. Try your own number with the calculator on the [home page](https://getzenvoice.com/#speed).

## Why the saving often disappears

- Raw transcripts are full of ums, restarts and missing punctuation, and fixing them by hand eats the time you saved.
- Numbers, dates and money come out as words.
- Cloud tools add a round trip before the text appears.

## What keeps it

Cleanup that happens before the text lands. In ZenVoice, fillers and “scratch that” are removed, “three thousand dollars” becomes $3,000 by rule, and the tone follows the app, all on your Mac. Parakeet V3, the default engine, writes a minute of speech in under a second on an M5.

## Where typing still wins

- Small edits inside a sentence.
- Open-plan offices and quiet libraries.
- Code itself (though prompts for coding agents are prose, and talking wins there).

Dictation that stays on your Mac.
